Having invasive surgery is always scary, and no surgery is more invasive than brain surgery. Doctors do all they can to ensure that their patients feel no pain during the ordeal.
Sometimes, though, things go wrong.
Nineteen-year-old Iga Jasica of Poland suddenly woke up mid-brain surgery, and asked surgeons how the operation was going.
As the surgery continued, she continued talking with them about her cats.
Jasica was in surgery to have a cancerous growth removed from her brain, when the anesthetic wore off and she woke up while her brain was exposed.
Neurosurgeon Dawid Larysz commented that:
Despite coming round, she didnt feel anything and was never in danger.
Jasica was unable to see or feel anything, and later said she doesnt remember waking up during the surgery:
I cant remember much, but the doctor said he talked to me about cats, which I love.
I missed Christmas because of this operation, but it is the best present I could have had as I am now feeling great, Jasica said after the surgery.
Doctors are investigating why the anesthetic wore off, but are speculating that something during the surgery may have triggered the anesthetic to wear off. Theyre also investigating whether the anesthetic was properly administered.
Most people understandably would have a difficult time in Jasicas situation, but she seems to be handling it quite well.
